The Virtues Project is at the heart of the Primus Schoolhouse approach to supporting the personal, social and emotional development of the children. The children develop a positive sense of themselves in relation to their peers, family and community. As they gain a better understanding of themselves and learn to respect the uniqueness of others, they begin to build positive relationships with others. The teachers provide a supportive environment in which children feel secure about discovering who they are and expressing their emotions, including feelings. With a good sense of self-identity, children learn to manage their emotions and behaviours and build positive relationships with others and make responsible decisions.

Self Awareness and Positive Concept

Primus Schoolhouse children are confident to try new activities, and say why they like some activities more than others. They are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will use the resources they need for their chosen activities. They say when they do or don’t need help.

Managing Feelings and Behaviour

The children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and other’s behaviour. And its consequences and know that some behaviour is unacceptable. They work effectively as part of a group or class, and understand and follow the rules. They adjust their behaviour to different situations, and take changes of routine in their stride.

Making Relationships

Primus Schoolhouse children are supported to play cooperatively, taking turns with others. They take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity. They show sensitivity to other’s needs and feelings, and form positive relationships with adults and other children.

Social Awareness

Children with social awareness are able to recognise the feelings and perspectives of others, appreciate diversity and show respect for others regardless of differences. The Primus Schoolhouse programme is designed to give the children opportunities to develop these skills.

Responsible Decision Making

At Primus Schoolhouse, we recognise that children need to learn to be responsible for themselves and their actions. Teachers help children do things for themselves so that they can become more independent. With independence comes decision-making and we help children take responsibility for their own actions and solve problems in a considerate, mutually satisfying way. Children are given opportunities to think through problems and explore different options. They are encouraged to reason and to consider the effects and consequences of their choices.
